Saturday thoughts and plays from coast to coast

What a great day of racing we have on tap.  With a derby prep as well as the return of champion Tepin out during a great stakes filled card down at Tampa. Out west, a pair of grade 2’s make for an interesting day at Santa Anita. And after a big Saturday last week, Gulfstream has only one stakes race, but a good one, with some other strong allowance and maiden races.  If you followed us last weekend you know we had a very successful weekend, picking some good winners, and a few nice exactas.  So lets try and repeat that effort and make some money!

Tampa Bay Downs    2466506194_01ce60b2b6_z

Race 5

5-3-2   RAFTING should be tough here, nice win on a similar surface over at Gulf-west, rested and shows nice works for this progressing colt.  Should sit a nice trip right off the pace. DESTIN ran a sneaky good race last out, needs to be more professional to get the job done today.  GETTYSBURG, looked good winning his maiden, but takes a big step up in class.

Race 8

5   TEPIN  is a nose and a head away from being unbeaten in her last 7 starts, beat the boys in the BC Mile and her numbers stand tall over this group. Don’t think Mark Casse wants to have her beat so expect her to be ready and not using this as a prep.  If there is a upset id lean towards PHOTO CALL first time for Pletcher.

Race 9

11-7-6   SMART SHOPPING had a great maiden breaker in the debut.  Great breeding and shows nice works, interesting that Robby Albarado follows this horse here for an ungraded stakes, as he is based at the Fair Grounds.  Good sign. Should be able to close into what might be a hot pace. COSMIC GIRL looks like a good favorite, impressive over the track last out in the prep for here, G1 wining damn means she has every right to be a good one.

Race 10

11-3-1   KARIBU GARDENS exploded in his last race at gulfstream off the layoff, looking very impressive.  Loves the distance and should get a good pace to make his run at, if he can just save some ground breaking from way outside.  ALOT has always been right there but likes to settle for minor awards, I can see him sitting mid pack and doing the same thing today.  WAR CORRESPONDENT is really good when healthy and he finally gets 2 races without a layoff.

Gulfstream Park

Race 4

5-4-1   No Shockers here in the Royal Delta, if SANDIVA can transfer her turf form to the dirt, which her workouts suggest she can she should be tough here sitting right off the pace.  Pletcher did this with Mshawish recently and has been wanting to with her for a little while.  PENWITH had a great come back race but who did she beat there? Always hanging around at the g2 and g3 level, I just don’t think she is as good as Sandiva.  closer CALL PAT can get up for a minor award.

Race 5

2-3-6   SOKIE probably needed her last race.  Beat a nice bunch in her maiden win and should be set to go, second off the layoff. TASUNKIE’s only turf race was pretty impressive and will be tough here, I just think Sokie gets the jump on her turning for home. Off the layoff, SHARE THE MUSIC could be tough for Michael Matz

Race 6

5-2-8   You probably wont get 5-1 on PROVE, but I love the turn backl from a mile to 7f.  Lopez gets the return call and should be able to sit right off the pace.  DROP SHOT stretches out off an impressive maiden race where he finished second, his breeding says the stretchout whould be no problem and should be tough here.  Closer STAR HILL, is talented enough, but needs to be a little closer early on to make any impact here.

Race 9

2-1-5   GREENGRASSOFYOMING ran huge to end his 2015 season here with a last to first score at good odds, another step up in competition but he loves this course and if he runs the same race, he wins this.  WITH RHYTHM should be able to save ground under Paco Lopez and make one run which I think is his best game.  ENGLISH MINISTER ran a nice race off the short break to lose to Karibu gardens, who I picked to win a stakes race at Tampa today.  Will be flying late. This starts the pick 4 so lets make a ticket….

.50$ late pick 4 play     1-2-5-10/4/1-4-6-10/4-9-10-11   32$

Race 10

4-8-9   SAFFRON HALL looks untlra tough here, close in his last two against tougher, drops to straight 16l claimers and has a perfect midpack running style for this race.  Maker/Rosario always dangerous.  ONE MORE CAT always tries hard and usually is around at the end, with a fast pace once again, should be right there.  SMOOTH STONE, might go favored, has been facing tougher and holding his own, should be up on the pace today, my two picks will have to catch him down the lane.

Race 11

10-4-6  DETERENT ran a good race off the layoff against cheaper and should sit a good stalking trip. DECENT and POLAR AXIS should both be involved early but may be vunerable late.

Race 12

9-4-10  SIR DUDLEY DIGGES ran decent in off the turf event, but two back ran a winning race on turf. A repeat of that race should win this one. ARCTIC JOY just missed wiring his last race and might be tough today up front. ABBOT is returning off a layoff and moves to turf which his breeding says should be his game, interesting longshot.

Good luck! Santa Anita picks to follow later…
